Chromonica Line

  • When HOHNER introduced the first ever 10 hole slide chromatic harmonica in 1912, nobody could have foreseen how successful the concept would be. This tradition is still going strong today. The design was awarded a US patent in 1928 and has been marketed under the name Chromonica since 1938. Thanks to continual upgrades, the Chromonica series not only remains the world's best selling chromatic harmonica, but is also the basis for all subsequent developments in this field, one of the timeless Hohner inventions which have defined the harmonica history of the past hundred years.

Super Chromonica Deluxe


The Deluxe version of the traditional 48/270 Chromonica represents a further milestone in the construction of high quality wooden comb chromatic harmonicas. New features include improved comb geometry for better response in the upper register, replaceable reed plates affixed with screws instead of nails, chrome plated mouthpiece with round holes, new reed plate mensur and reed profiles and thicker reed plates. The slide assembly can easily be converted for left hand use.

These features improve handling and response, making the Super Chromonica Deluxe louder and more airtight while retaining the typical HOHNER sound.

CX-12 Line

  • The CX-12 represents the greatest single innovation in commercial chromonica manufacture since HOHNER‘s introduction of the first chromatic harmonica in 1912.
  • The concept was the brainchild of Gerhard Knoppek, a HOHNER R&D staff member who in 1991 was given the task of thinking up a radically new chromatic instrument. Knoppek‘s construction was brilliantly simple - the comb and reed plate assembly is mounted in a one piece mouthpiece / housing unit and held in place by a powerful metal spring at the back. The slide can be removed instantly, but is exceptionally airtight. Disassembly and reassembly of these components takes only seconds and requires no tools.
  • The CX-12 was presented on the Frankfurt Music Trade Fair in 1992 and went on to win a major German industrial design prize. It is the preferred axe of chromatic luminaries such as Bill Barrett from Hazmat Modine or LA studio crack Tollak Ollestad and is regarded by many as the most airtight and user-friendly chromatic on the market.
